Headmaster’s Newsletter 27 February 2019

Dear Parents/Guardian

“Adversity causes some men to break; others to break records.” – William Arthur Ward

Since last week’s newsletter, it has been a shortened academic week…but still packed with much activity!

Our Inter-House Gala was a successful event last week, with the changed scheduling seeing it take place in the early evening – an exciting change. My thanks go to the Sports’ Department (under the leadership of Ms Louise Jelliman) for organising this more than successful event.

The mid-term break weekend saw our First XI Cricket Team boys participate successfully in the National Independent Schools’ Cricket Festival hosted by Woodridge Preparatory School, Port Elizabeth. As the scores will reflect, it proved to be a most successful tournament on a number of levels, with our boys showing true-grit and ability. I thank Mr Sean Veenstra (Head of Boys’ Sport and First Team Coach) and Mr Hala Xulu (Tour Manager) for their respective roles in making this tour the success it was. Teamwork at its best, I thank the parents too for their unfailing support on every level.

Next week Friday (8 March) is our annual Cansa Shavathon Day, an opportunity to show support for survivors and victims of cancer. Details of this day will be shared in due course.

As stated in an earlier newsletter, a separate letter will be sent out by me by the end of this week confirming general security measures in place at Clifton, as well as those to be introduced to enhance our security.

Although a seemingly simplistic title of the article by Cory Turner, “The key to raising a happy child”, the article is filled with little nuggets of information. With reference to the book “The self- driven child”, the article by Turner is well worth a read for all of us. The link is:

We bid a sad farewell to Mrs Jan Menear as she leaves Clifton after 13 years service to take up a position at Epworth School as from 01 March 2019. We thank Jan for all she has done for Clifton and wish her well in her future endeavours.

I wish you a good week ahead.

Kind regards.
